Penny picked her up and they
had lunch at Pete's near the train station. The Tribune
was at the train station to photograph the departure. (Photo in
Tues Local section) The train was delayed for departure due to
a freight train that could not get over the grade. After they
backed that down Carolyn & Ann's
train left SLO and promptly broke down in the tunnel at the top
of Questa Grade. At the stop in Paso Robles Carolyn's sister Jeannie
and her husband Marty, Niece
Valerie and other were on the
Paso platform with signs & noisemakers to wish them well.

The trip was long, the food and wine tasting were great
and the travelers got into Portland around 8:30 pm Tues. night (about
3 hours late). Time for a late dinner with friends and get ready

Assembled bikes. Carolyn's
had a few problems that were easily corrected at the bike shop Ann
had shipped hers to. They dipped their wheels in the Pacific near
Ft. Stevens and rode 22 miles. |

Great weather & a tail wind again very little climbing.
Located east of Portland. In a motel
as there are no campgrounds nearby. The roses throughout Portland
are beautiful and at one point there was a view of Mt Rainer, Mt
Hood & Mt St. Helens. Lots of traffic. |

Took bikes in to a shop in Pendleton for a checkup.
Minor problems that were taken care of. Stopped @ local Chamber
of Commerce to look for a campground and was invited by local rider
Karen Wagner to camp in her back
yard. Had showers and a nice bottle of wine on the deck. |

Stayed in the same backyard. Took them out to dinner
to thank them. We went to a Micro Brew/Restaurant and the owner
of the place picked up the tab. Interviewed
by the local paper about the ride. Had the bikes checked
over and they are OK. Went to a local printer to have signs made
up. They are bright orange and say "Portland to Portland Gals" on
them. They will be placed on the rear of the bikes. Stats for the
week: Total elevation gain - 17,800 feet of climbing (not recording
descent) Total miles - 469 |
