Description

The Pozo region was an area of excitement in the late l800s.  There was a minor gold rush.  The region is now a cattle area.  A combination of rolling terrain, attractive vegetation and quiet roads make this an ideal bicycling area.  Oaks, Grey Pines , sycamores and chapparal combine to offer pleasing vistas.  The Grey Pines were, until recently, called Digger Pines.  The term originated as a derogatory name for the local Chumash Indians.  As you climb and swoosh on your bike, be on the alert for wild turkeys, deer and other critters.  You bicyling birdwatchers might want to bring along some binoculars.  The elusive Phainopepla ("bird" to you un-informed) might buzz you and your bicycle.  Also, there is reportedly a saloon out there somewhere.  You should be able to find it.!

Route

From the park, the route is out Pozo Road to Pozo.  There is a hard climb of one or two miles, then downhill and rolling to the Pozo Saloon.  Take a pause for a breather there.  Or maybe lunch.  This is not a vegetarian hangout.  Look at the old photos on the walls.  One shows a local hanging. Gander up at the ceiling.  Former customers did a clever thing.  They somehow stuck dollar bills up there.  Ask how it was done.  On departure continue onward on Pozo Road to a left on Parkhill Road.  You’ll find rolling stuff on Parkhill to a left on Las Pilitas Road.  This presents a climb, then a loooong downhill to a right on Pozo Road and a return to Santa Margarita.  Good sandwiches await at the deli.
