June 7. Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is full (as of 2:30 PM, June 7)

June 1. AIDS Ride in town June 3. They will ride from Paso Robles out Hwy. 46 West to Hwy. 1. Then follow south to South Bay Blvd. to LOVR and south to Higuera, Ontario Road, Shell Beach Rd. to Hwy. 1 again to Santa Maria. They have about 3000 riders and will occasionally need our help with directions. Watch for them and be a helpful SLOB.

June 1. O'Connor is close. The old wooden bridge between Cuesta College and the back National Guard section is being removed and rebuilt (cutting us off from O'Connor). Apparently, the bridge will be closed until late November.

May 22. Indulgence Ride. Unfortunately, the Indulgence Ride is already full, but Dave Abrecht is maintaining a waiting list. To get more information including how to get on the waiting list,, visit our Indulgence Ride page.

May 3. Bike Month Kickoff. Below are a few pics from yesterday during our Bike Month Kick Off ride from AG village to Lopez Lake and back ( 22 miles).
Poor turnout.  Weather - gloomy to start but turned beautiful.
Sharon and Dale had 7 riders, two new people - Gina and Dan from Grover Beach (in pic), plus Stan, Bob, and Fred from SLOBC.  We had a great ride, with two coffee/snack stops at Biddle Park (going and coming) which we did via parking our van there ahead of time with the goodies.  (Not intended as a precedent!).
Warren had nobody! show up for his ride.  Did a solo.  Showed up at Biddle Park as we were leaving, the first time.
Janie and Stu had some of the standard Tortoises for their ride (don't know how many).

May 3. Vine Street Project. Bill Van Orden sent the pictures below with a note: "Here are a few pictures of the North County contingent of the Slo Bike Club at the Groundbreaking Celebration for South Vine street Improvements being completed by the City of Paso Robles. Thought you might be interested in seeing them if you already haven' t seen them already."

May 3. Wine Century. About a dozen club members signed up to ride the Wine Century last Saturday out of Santa Rosa. The threat of rain motivated most of them to abandon the ride and stay home. Two club members (Dave and Debbie Abrecht) showed they had the character to stick it out. Dave writes of their experience:

"Sometimes, old age does not produce wisdom.  We decided to start the ride today, believing that rain was forecasted for the afternoon.  We had showers at the start and by the time we hit the first rest stop it was raining.  We pushed on, thinking (somehow) it would get better and by the time we got to lunch we were committed to the entire ride....and drenched.
Good decision on all of your parts to bail out but it still is a beautiful ride and we'll try again next year.
PS:  Riding our touring bikes with disc brakes and bigger tires was our only good decision of the day.  But we finished safe and sound and now it's Miller time."

April 26. Wildflower. We had a great day for bicycling yesterday and the great group of volunteers made it even better.   Every rider I met was full of praise and compliments for the way we organize and support the Wildflower.  People who come back again and again said that every year we get better and better and it's true.  It's obvious that we all have great passion to give our riders the best bicycling experience possible and we do a good job of doing that.  We are a great club.  Thank you all for what you give.

April 18. Wildflower Preride. Wow! What a wonderful job Tommy Potter and his team did on today's pre-ride. There was food where we needed and the food was great. The SAG support was always coming by to make sure everything was okay (or to let you know where you buddy was). The weather was fantastic -- while some might complain about the wind, it didn't bother me (on my low riding trik!(.. Click here for a galary of photos taken by the Goldenbergs..

April 11. Joan Petersen's Birthday Ride. Twenty some riders left Morro Bay at 7:30 AM (brrrrrrr!) and headed to Shamel Park for coffee and snacks.  Joan and a few other stalwarts rode on to the Elephant Seal Preserve before turning around and heading home (for a 75 mile ride). Pretty stiff headwind along the north coast.  The highlight was a birthday "serenade" by an impromptu street "band" in Harmony.

March 30. Poker Ride. Kathy and Harvey Cohon again did a stellar job putting on a fun poker ride. The weather was perfect, we had an interesting route, got to see hundreds of riders doing the Solvang Double and had a great pizza lunch afterwards where we had fun cheating each other. Click here for a galary of photos sent in by Sue Lyon, Harvey Petersen and Janie Goldenberg.

March 8. Bicycling in New York City. The New York Times has a great article about cycling in the city (click here). There's a lot about how things have changed since the 80's when the author started cycling there. There is also a lot about how cyclists (some) are our worst enemies because they are so discourteous.

March 3. Bicycle Safety. As we all know, our Safety Director, Warren Hockenbary, is very passionate about how we can participate in cycling activities as safely and legally as possible. The front page of the Local section in today's Tribune features an article in which Warren and Keven Christian are teaching a number of cyclists bicycling safety using the League of American Bicyclists' Street Smart class. Click here to read the whole article.

February 23. Time Trial. Dave and Debbie Abrecht again organized a large contingent of club members to participate in the Amgen Tour of California activities in Solvang. While there they enjoyed this year's time trial as well as rides to Los Olivos and Lompoc. Various club members contributed photos from the event. Click here for a galary of those photos.

February 22 . NEW RIDE!! Join Bruce Collier and ride from the Bob Jones Trail Head to Grover Beach for a pancake breakfast at the Grange Hall.

February 9. Pedal to the Pier. On Saturday, Walt Bremer, Dale Sutliff, Larry Bradford and a couple of other SLOBs participated in Team Columbia's Pedal to the Pier Ride from Avila to Cayucos. It was also Dale's 67th birthday ride.   Yes, that's George Hincape in the fourth photo with Dave Abrecht, and three members of Columbia's championship women's team in the second one with Walt Bremer.
We got a couple additional pictures from this event of George Hincape (who was so friendly with everyone) with Bill and Patti van Orden.

February 8. Website Update. Will Benedict has been exploring ways to improve our web site by giving it a new look and renovating its organization. This is work in progress. You comments are welcome. Click here to review it's current state. There is still a lot to do before we integrate these ideas into our web site and we solicit your feedback to help improve our site's utility to you and the club. Send your comments to Will or Frank.

January 19. Ride Leader's Dinner. On January 10, about 50 club members attended the annual Ride Leader's Dinner at the Madonna Inn. This bash is sponsored by the club to give thanks to the many club members who have contributed their time and effort to lead some of the many rides held each year. Click here for a galary of photos sent in by Gail Vanderlinde.

January 19. Amgen Tour of California

In just one month, the tour returns for the fourth time to San Luis Obispo County. This exciting race, which features many of the best professional cyclists in the world, has been expanded to 9 days and features a different and more challenging route. The fifth stage takes the riders from Visalia to Paso Robles. Paso Robles new mayor Duane Picanco recent observed that
"The City of Paso Robles is honored to serve as the Stage 5 Finish for the Amgen Tour of California. The level of competition, the pure excitement of an internationally renowned sporting event and the opportunities it will bring to our community make this a remarkable event for Paso Robles."
Clear here to find out more about what Paso Robles is planning in support of the tour and how you can take part in the fun including joining their booster club and getting reserved seating at the event.

January 18. Wedding Celebration. About 30 club members gathered at the Custom's House in Avila to congratulate Janie Holman and Steve Toschi on their new marriage. Click here to see a photo album of the event from Dorothy Curhan

January 4. Wildflower. The Wildflower is already full (we registered over 1400 people in 6 hours - most of those during the first hour). If you still want to register, click here to visit our cancellation site where you can attempt to buy a spot from a registered rider.

January 2. Ragged Point Ride. We had a fabulous day for a bike ride yesterday.  It was nice and cool on the north coast, no wind, beautiful green hills and lots and lots of happy bicycle riders.  It was a great way to start a new year of wonderful club rides.  Thank you Dave and Debbie for putting it on.

The second pair were taken during the weekly Monday Ramblers ride which departs from Templeton Park.

October 27. Biking in Austria / Bavaria. Club members Dorothy Curhan, Judie Prock, Sue & Mark Lyon, Pam Nargie, Dave Williams, and Arlene Winn just finished a two week bike tour in the lake districts of Austria and Bavaria. Click here to see a lovely photo slide show from Dorothy Curhan.

October 7. 80K Semi-Senile Senior Ride. This ride (scheduled for Saturday, October 25) has been CANCELLED due to injuries to both leaders.

October 1. Recycling. Thanks to the Cal Poly University Organic Farm composts, we found a new a productive home for the waste from the Lighthouse. Thanks to Sharon and Dale Sutliff who made this happen. Click here for more on this accomplishment.

September 28. Lighthouse That was one fabulous ride put on by a bunch of dedicated SLOBC members. Thanks to Dave Abrecht, Joan Petersen and Robert Fuller Davis for their leadership in pulling us together for such a wonderful day and another outstanding event. For the first time in years, the riders didn't have to fight a tough head wind to get to the light house. Throughout the day they we treated to friendship and food at the rest stop and the SAG drivers who helped them if they had any problems.

September 14. Indulgence Ride. Saturday, 51 riders participated in this year's Indulgence Ride. Again it was a superb ride thanks to the efforts of Mark and Sue Lyon.  Great routes (three separate routes suitable for slopokes, frequent feeders and flyers)!  Great food!  Great support!  Super dinner!  Great company! Fantastic planning!   Mark even pulled off a miracle of rapidly and smoothly retrieving one stranded rider inside Ft Ord. What a wonderful job. Also thanks to Kent Brahms for towing the bikes to and from Monterey and providing support, and to Gail Davis for organizing, purchasing and delivering a wonderful lunch.

September 7. Bob Garing Award. Robert (Red) and Gail Davis were honored this year as the recipients of the 2008 SLO Bob Garing Award. Former recipients Joan Petersen and Bruce Collier recalled their many contributions to the club and to the bicycling community. Red served as president of the club for four years and has been an active leader in the bicycle coalition and the county bicycle advisory committee. Gail has served as club advocate, one of our sunshine ladies, and organizer of many club activities. This is just a few of their many contributions. A really deserving choice.

October 31. Share the Road Campaign! Thanks to the coalition's efforts, a new 12-foot tall billboard has been added off Elks Lane next to the Sunset Drive-In in SLO. It is also visible from Hwy 101 northbound. This is just another facet of the coalition's Share the Road campaign which includes TV, radio, and billboard components. You can see the tv ads at the coaliton website.

January 21. Bob Garing Bicycle Safety Day

There was a great turnout of cyclists and non-cyclists at Mission Plaza yesterday to celebrate the Bob Garing Safety Day. They participated in the dedication of a bike rack honoring Bob's commitment to bicycle safety. Bob's children were also there, which added a sweet personal note to the celetration.

Frank Mullin quoted some of Bob's view on safety and encouraged people to "ride as though Bob Garing was on their shoulder -- make him proud."
