Ride Leader Guidelines | Ride
Leader - Prior to Ride |
|---|
- Select ride route and pre-ride,
if possible, checking for safety, points of interest, regrouping points, coffee
stops or restaurants, rest rooms, and ride distance.
- Communicate the ride
start location and time to the ride coordinator for publication in our award-winning
newsletter, and on our website.
| | Ride Leader - During
the Ride |
|---|
- Arrive at ride location at least 10 minutes
before the ride.
- Welcome and introduce members.
- Share cell phone
numbers.
- Make a head count.
- Describe the route and planned stops.
Indicate where there might be hazards along the route, or places where the riders
should take special care due to road conditions or traffic.
- Advise the
group of rules and laws that might apply to the ride (see
advisories below).
- For large rides, it is also a good idea
to get someone to act as sweep. The leader and sweep should turn or their cell
phones so they can communicate with one another.
- When stopping (to regroup,
etc.), allow enough space for all riders to stop safely without hindering motor
vehicles or other cyclists.
| | Sweep |
|---|
- Fall
in at the rear of the ride group - remain there throughout the ride.
- Let
the ride leader know about any mechanical problems, accidents, etc., that might
require the leader to halt or modify the ride.
| | Riders |
|---|
- Be
responsible for personal safety, especially at legal stops and cross-traffic turns.
- Inform
the leader (or sweep) whenever a problem occurs within the group.
- If you
leave the ride group for any reason, inform the leader or sweep so that all members
are accounted for.
| | Advisories |
|---|
- Be
responsible for your own personal safety (e.g., do not follow blindly into turns
or across intersections).
- Bicycles are not pedestrians, so do not expect
pedestrian privileges.
- Cyclists are subject to California motor vehicle
laws.
- Stop at stop signs and red signal lights.
- Signal before
making turns.
- Proceed through intersections as individual vehicles, not
as a single mass of riders.
- Don't hug the right lane at intersection when
you plan to go straight.
- Riding on the sidewalk is not legal.
- Ride
single file, where advisable.
- Leave escape space for riders who are riding
in a danger zone (side-by-side) - don't crowd.
- Wear clothing designed
to enhance visibility and safety.
- Be courteous to all, including pedestrians
and motor vehicle drivers.
